Shetland Stonecraft started in 1997 and although specializing in dry stone walling, we has been able to diversify into other forms of stonework including: facing, cladding, retaining, sea walls, pier work, monuments, plaques, historical buildings, listed structures and memorials as well as garden and boundary walls.
SSC has a wide client base with regular customers returning for work including private, local authority and community groups.
This year (2008) SSC has been invited to take part in an exciting project at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show where Martin Anderson co-founder of the British Motor Neurone Disease Association plans to recreate a Shetland croft house garden from the 1940’s. The stone for the facade of the exhibit has been taken from Shetland and we will reconstruct this for the front entrance to the old croft house. The BBC will be following this project with a documentary later in the year.
Alan Smiles has been at the helm since 1998 and is qualified to the ‘Advanced’ level of the Mastercraftsman certification scheme awarded by the DSWA (dry stone walling association) of Great Britain. Alan was first trained in dry stane dyking in Shetland and has trained several other folk in this craft who have gone on to work and stay in Shetland.
